Alasdair McLaren to speak at BL Guernsey Trusts Conference

4 November 2015

First Names Group Client Services Director and Chair of STEP Guernsey, Alasdair McLaren, will participate in the concluding panel discussion at the BL Guernsey Trusts Conference 2015 next Wednesday.

The conference, entitled ‘A Shock to the System’, is hosted by Channel Islands business magazine BL (formerly Businesslife) and will address whether regulation, consolidation, operational challenges and external demands are putting the traditional trust model at risk.

To round off the day, a final panel session will ask: ‘Are trusts fit for purpose?’ Taking all of the previous sessions into account, the discussion will centre round the question of whether trusts, especially those structured in the Channel Islands, are currently fit for purpose. With foundations already an alternative to trusts, and other vehicles such as private trust companies, are we likely to see a reduction in the traditional model and an increase in alternative structures?

Alasdair will feature on this panel alongside: Gillian Browning, Director of the Fiduciary Supervision Policy and Innovations Division at the Guernsey Financial Services Commission; Gavin Ferguson, Managing Partner at Appleby; Geoffrey Kertesz, Associate at Withers; and Eason Rajah QC, Barrister at Ten Old Square in London.

Based in our Guernsey office, Alasdair has over 25 years’ experience advising international clients on fiduciary structuring. He is Chairman of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Guernsey branch and a member of STEP Council, a member of the Institute of Directors, a CA, a Chartered Fellow of the Securities Institute and, until this year, Chair of the Technical Committee of the Guernsey Association of Trustees, where he remains on the committee.

This conference follows on from the Jersey equivalent earlier this year – the BL Jersey Trusts Conference 2015 – at which First Name Lorraine Wheeler, fellow Client Services Director and Chair of STEP Jersey, spoke on the same panel.
